PHASE TWO

L E S S O N   3

In this lesson, students are challenged to create data sets that have specific statistical measures, such as a mean of 8. The process of working backwards to solve the problems helps students develop a deeper understanding of means, medians, modes, and ranges.

Mathematical Goals

Determine and describe means, medians, modes, and ranges.
Create data sets that have specific statistical measures.
Explore the relationship between means, medians, and modes.
Use the problem-solving strategy of working backwards.

Decide whether to hand out all the Mystery Data games to students at once or to hand them out one by one. If you choose the latter, then cut the games into separate cards. Make enough copies for half the class, since pairs can switch games.
